How to Create a Professional Product Background

A practical walkthrough for turning an ordinary product photo into a studio-grade image: lighting, surface, shadow and background choice.

Start with a clean capture

Everything downstream depends on the original frame. Shoot on a plain, non-reflective surface near a large window or a diffused light source, and avoid mixing daylight with warm indoor bulbs — mixed colour temperature is the single most common reason product photos look amateur.

Keep the camera steady and shoot slightly above eye level for most objects. Fill roughly 80% of the frame, leaving margin so you can crop to square and vertical later.

Choose the background before you shoot

Decide whether the product belongs on clean studio white or in a lifestyle scene. White converts best for marketplaces and comparison shopping; lifestyle scenes work better for social and brand storytelling.

If you already know the final look, you can light the product to suit it — a dark showroom scene wants a harder key light than a bright marble studio.

Generate and check the shadow

The shadow is what makes a composite believable. A product with no contact shadow floats; a product with a shadow pointing the wrong way looks pasted.

Pick a shadow style that matches your generated scene, then look at the point where the product meets the surface. If it reads correctly at 100% zoom, the image will hold up anywhere.

Export deliberately

Export WEBP for storefronts, PNG for archives and JPG when a platform demands it. Keep every original file — you may want to regenerate with a different background next season.
